Place Holder For Friends 12/21/2008
Probably at least a dozen years ago, an article appeared in a local paper - nothing special really - a man named Frank, who had been a state employee, had embezzled around $150,000 in state funds over a period of years. He had been caught, convicted, and sent away for a sufficient period. However, no money had been recovered, as he had spent it all, apparently over the same period of years that he had been stealing it, at a strip club.
The reporter had interviewed Frank as part of his research, and had asked him in a general way why he'd done it, and Frank had replied with a specific phrase about the ennui and boredom of life in general, and his life in particular - he was 41 at the time. The phrase he used was "the humdrum of nothingness", and those words have stuck in my mind ever since I read the article, as indeed they must have stuck in the reporter's mind, or even the editor's... why else include them in the published piece?
I presume that Frank has been released by now. The strip club where he spent the money is still around even today... I like to think that maybe Frank went back there when he got out, and managed to wash the humdrum of nothingness away again for awhile, at least one more time... at least I hope he did.
